My name is Jason Torres, I’m a student at UNC Charlotte and also the first person in my family to go to college. If it were not for Dr Kathy, I would have had much trouble getting into college and reaching my dream of becoming a pharmacist. When I was in my last year of high school, I had no idea how I would get even into college or get my FAFSA application completed. One of the biggest struggles was the FAFSA. Since I graduated in 2024, the same year the FAFSA had some restructuring, it was a tedious process. Dr. Kathy was my best hero in getting it done. It had ups and downs, but in the end, we got it done without any problems. I love UNC Charlotte!

WH, Yale Class of 2028

As a student from a First-Generation, Low-Income background, I can absolutely say that Dr. Fine has left a tremendous amount of impact on my life and in my decision to pursue a college education. During 2022, when I was applying to colleges through the QuestBridge program and Common App, she wholeheartedly supported me with my essay writing with her constructive feedback and critiques, and I can absolutely say that it was a critical influence in my success in being accepted and now enrolled at Yale University.

Over the course of the year that I received mentorship from Dr. Fine, she was always someone that I could reach out to and ask for help. I met Dr. Fine through College Essay Guy’s Matchlighter’s Program. The Matchlighter’s Program only required a 10 hour commitment from Dr. Fine’s part, but she was devoted to my well-being and supported me for a whole year, going above and beyond what she signed up for. Dr. Fine is someone who cares not just about her mentee’s well-being, but also their career development.
