STUDENTS SPOTLIGHT
Stories of Transformation: In Their Own Words
At QCCCM, we believe every student has a story worth telling. These Student Spotlights share powerful, personal journeys of resilience, guidance, and success—with each one showing the impact of compassionate college and career mentorship.
My parents decided to move my family from Syria to the United States when I was 17 years old, looking for a better future for my siblings and I. I barely understood how the U.S. educational system worked, let alone how complex the process of applying to colleges was. I didn’t know how to start the process, draft my personal essay or even what schools I could realistically hope to get into. Everything felt overwhelming–like I was already behind and trying to catch up in a race I didn’t know I had entered.
Kathy was the first person who made me feel like I wasn’t alone. From the very beginning, she believed in me and helped me believe in myself. She was a candle that lit my way when everything felt dark and uncertain. She didn’t just explain the steps–she took time to understand my story and help me tell it in a way that felt true to who I am. She helped me feel seen, capable, and worthy of aiming high.
Thanks to Kathy’s constant support, guidance, and encouragement, I got into the University of Virginia and I am thriving here. I am a pre-dental student majoring in Biology and Middle Eastern Studies. I’m a rising second year maintaining a strong GPA and a part of multiple organisations, societies and clubs on grounds. I honestly don’t know how I would have done it without her. She helped me find confidence, direction, and purpose when I needed it most.
Her new nonprofit is going to change lives. If it weren’t for her, my entire future would look different–and I know so many other students will feel the same once they have the chance to work with her.
I want to take the time and thank you for all you have done for me. I could not have done it without your help and support. UVA is great! I absolutely love it and am doing really good academically. Thank you for checking in. Again, I am really sorry for the late response and I hope you find my testimonial beneficial. Goodluck on your non-profit, you are truly an amazing person. I wish you all the best!
